ARE YOU IN RECOVERY FROM FEELING MISERABLE?

Once in recovery, an addict can have an enhanced, amazing life. There are plenty of people who aren’t addicts who also need that. Maybe you just want to be in recovery from being a miserable human being.

Being a part of community is a big deal, so is a daily practice regimen. Journaling, as I indicated earlier, can have huge benefits in terms of getting your issues out, seeing them clearly, and then getting relief. There are plenty of people who have a difficult time communicating this stuff, even if it’s just talking to another person and being honest with them about what’s really going on in your life. Don’t just call people up to talk about job opportunities. Call them up and go, “I’m terrified. I’ve got a job interview,” or “I don’t know whether I should do this. What do you think?”

It takes vigilance to a different level when you begin to ask, What are my motives? What am I doing this for? Is this something I really want to do? Is this really who I am? Is this something I’m just aimlessly chasing?

Don’t forget that often overlooked element in self-inquiry called fun. It’s important not to take ourselves too seriously, and we all need to try to have fun whatever we’re doing. There’s got to be joy in life or the boredom that creeps in brings with it the potential for addictions. Whether we realize it or not, we are all trying to get a connection to a bearable lightness of being, a state of ecstasy instead of just sort of trudging down this dark, sometimes nasty existence road until death.

You can live in the mansion or you can live in the tenement, and you can have transcendence in your heart in either place. I’ve been with people from all over the map on this. Some put a gun in their mouths even though they have everything, and then there are people who own next to nothing yet feel free and happy. It’s all about your qualities inside and what you’re holding onto and not holding onto.

That’s one of the key lessons here. You can actually orchestrate your own life by being specific about what it is you want, by figuring it out, finding out who you are or really want to be, and then giving it the spiritual energy that allows the universe to respond.

Experimentation is a big piece of recovery, trying out new methods and behaviors without becoming too attached. In the early process you’re probably just figuring out how to get rid of some of what you’re not. There is a trust factor you must embrace so that your journey will be fruitful.
